North Norfolk is steeped in a rich malting and brewing heritage, and for over ten years we have built up an unparalleled bond with our local brewers, ensuring the strongest connection between the finest malting barley and the finest real ales. Our work with the East Anglian Brewers Association and Crisp Maltings at Great Ryburgh have allowed us to achieve total traceablity for the ales: some of the bottles even show a grid reference of the field where the malting barley was grown!
Branthill Farm enjoys the distinctive coastal climate of North Norfolk which helps extend the natural ripening process, giving the malt a superior quality for these superb real ales. It is one of the best places on the planet for growing malting barley. The farm is also a member of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) which connects farming with the protection of the local environment. We are proud of our contribution to preserving the local landscape, and to wildlife conservation.
So, what do we have at Branthill Farm?
The Real Ale Shop
“The Real Ale Shop is located on Branthill Farm, a classic malting barley farm supplying local breweries
and ensuring a connection all the way from Barley to Beer!”
The Real Ale Shop opened on Branthill Farm in 2004 when Teddy Maufe decided to extend his love of Norfolk real ales beyond just that of drinking them. With the farm’s top quality barley being malted for many, many breweries (large and small, all across the country), it seemed fitting to open the shop up where it all begins: right in the heart of the farm! When you stand in the shop, surrounded by the fields of barley on the beautiful, gently slopes of Branthill’s landscapes, with rows of delicious Norfolk real ales on the shelves, you can rest assured in the feeling of provenance!
We have a range of approximately 60 Real Ales from fifteen Norfolk breweries, all bottle conditioned for a fresher, fuller taste, and many of them sourcing their malt directly from us, allowing a strong, local connection between barley and beer.
We stock from the following Norfolk Real Ale breweries:
- Woodforde’s Brewery (Norwich)
- Beeston Brewery (Beeston)
- Wagtail Brewery (Old Buckenham)
- Panther Brewery (Reepham)
- Elmtree Brewery (Snetterton)
- Poppyland Brewery (Cromer)
- Humpty Dumpty Brewery (Reedham)
- Brancaster Brewery (Brancaster Staithe)
- Why Not Brewery (Norwich)
